ast night we went to see Jarvis Cocker at Music Hall in Williamsburg. It’s always inspiring to see Jarvis perform. He’s such a showman and his new album proves that he’s on a steady path as what I would describe as the Johnny Cash of indie music. Quirky lyrics and while a clean break from anything pop or pulp, musically infectious. “Further Complications” is definitely a must for your music collection

Sometimes New York gives me this feeling like I’m a little kid and the world is my oyster, everything seems grand and glamorous and shiny. I like that. Other times its really awful, dirty and gross, maybe sticky or something. Clubbing is a good mix of the two, its dark and sweaty, optimistic and magical. It reminds me that there’s always a good time, even if things suck. You know what I mean? And no one did it better, or knows it better, than the people who have been around the block, the heroes and villains of New York Nightlife.
And I gotta start with Sophia Lamar. Some people have the Virgin Mary, but I have Sophia. She’s the original Queen of the Scene, a legend, kind of a Norma Desmond but without the tragedy and craziness, know what I mean? Sophia introduced me to Ruff Club, and in a way to New York. I still remember the first nite we met, in the basement of the Annex. Danzie was spinning with Jake of the Films. The place was packed elbow-to-elbow. That whole dark, sweaty, magical, optimistic thing was going on. Sophia is stories and glamour and wit. Solid gold.
Kenny Kenny, who runs amok at Vandam Sundays and Salon Grande, is classic Club Kid. She? He? — I don’t even know, is a sweetheart and someone I look forward to getting to know better. Kenny goes back to the days of Tunnel and Limelight, whose infamous parties caught the eye of the media nationwide. Crazytown. And his looks are unmistakable, like, I don’t have words. Google him. While you’re at it, google all these darn kids.

Yozmit! I don’t know how long Yozmits been around, but you can see her regularly at the Box, and her performance stuff is the bees knees, the dogs tuxedo. I’m stuck, obsessed. Like, I cant even talk to her. She squeezed my shoulder last nite, and it was way better than chilling with Rihanna or Katie Perry. I mean, Mary Wilson of the Supremes sang last nite, and I’m still yakking away about Yozmit! Check out her website, or come see her with me at the Box, you’re life wont be the same!!

I guess three is good for now, right? Do you want more? I’ll continue the Rogue’s Gallery as the mood strikes me.
SEE YA FRIDAY
I scooted down to the waterfront this past sunday to see one of my favorite bands. The last time I saw The Black Lips it was over at Bowery and they just blew my mind away. Sadly though, I only had 3 frames left in my Fish Eye, but I tried to make the best out of it. I haven’t crowd-surfed in years, and the last time I did a stage dive was back in 1997. So, when you can pull out any of those two (or both!), it is a definite sign that you are having a fucking blast!

Using information design principles and graphical techniques, the 85+ recorded covers of Joy Division’s “Love Will Tear Us Apart” is mapped in relation to the original recordings by the band. Although available information was limited, the graph is data rich in representing time since original recording, recording artist, release name/date and label. Various graphical techniques employed (eg. radiating dots) allowed for data to be accessed (number of recordings per year) while also creating an interesting aesthetic presentation.

One of my favorite new labels, Deadfish Audio, (fronted by Italian DJ/ Producer Mowgli) is back with their 7th release by the Swiss duo Round Table Knights. The EP entitled ‘ BellyDance ‘ and first track of the bunch starts off with a slow build that leads into a catchy organ melody. Vocal hooks, claps & great drum arrangements. On the remix is the big boss Mowgli who takes it a bit further chopping it up and adding a stretchy bassline that chugs along driving the song to a new level. Mint! The next two tracks ‘ On ‘ and ‘ On & On ‘ are both one in the same. ‘ On ‘ is a spooky klaxon filled ” less is more ” track that takes on a darker vibe while the later ‘ On & On ‘ is the RTK own rework of ‘ On ‘. ‘ On & On ‘ steps it up a notch adding a driving kick and hidden bassline wobbles.
Not sure on the exact release date but this is defiantly one of the labels to watch in the coming months.
For fans of Made To Play, Sound Pellegrino, Dirtybird, Front Room Recordings etc
Round Table Knights played RUFF CLUB back in April…you can check out the photos from the party HERE!

MEGA MEGA MEGA!
Word has it The Count & Sinden have been busy in the studio working on their debut album due out on Domino later this year. ‘Mega’ is said to be the CHOON of the album so far. Although hard to categorize mixing and mashing cross genres with a smashing peak hour club melody, deep sub bass, b-more-ish shuffle & dark epic breakdown ‘Mega’ is sure to make many top 10 lists this Summer! Both Sinden & The Count showcase their unique sounds on this one as well.. its neither here nor there but yet the perfect blend of this and that (can’t beat that with a bat?). Make sense? Better yet check out the clip below and see for yourself.
‘Mega’ drops September 7th (says Your-Army) so check out Beatport, Juno etc and pick up a copy.
**edit** ‘Mega’ is up on Beatport and avail for those in the UK/ Europe. I guess us Yanks have to wait until the 7th!
